Infrastructure Issues

INVESTING IN GODERICH’S FUTURE

Infrastructure may not always be the most exciting topic, but it affects our lives every day—from the roads we travel and the sidewalks we use to our water, sewer and stormwater systems.

During this past term, Council began addressing important projects that had been delayed for far too long. The biggest issue that we knew right away when sworn in, was to tackle was complete infrastructure replacement under the ground in the downtown square. Some questioned why it was not tackled during the tornado but the municipality was not prepared nor had discussions with the business owners. A plan had to be put in place to make it the smoothest construction project we could. Today, we are nearing completion after 2 years. These decisions have not always been easy or inexpensive, but postponing necessary work does not make it more affordable. It simply passes a larger problem—and a larger bill—to future councils and taxpayers.

As we look toward the next four years, I will continue to support:

✓ Responsible, long-term infrastructure planning
✓ Safe and accessible roads, sidewalks and public spaces
✓ Continued investment in our water, sewer and stormwater systems
✓ Careful management of municipal buildings and community facilities
✓ Open communication about project costs, timelines and disruptions
✓ Seeking grants and partnerships to reduce the burden on local taxpayers

Every project must be considered carefully. We need to balance what our community needs with what residents can reasonably afford.

Infrastructure is an investment in the safety, strength and future of Goderich. I am ready to continue asking the difficult questions, listening to residents and making responsible decisions on your behalf.
