Four Years of Listening, Learning & Working for Goderich

When I was elected to Goderich Town Council in 2022, I knew there would be a lot to learn.

There was.

Municipal government involves difficult choices, competing priorities and the responsibility of managing today’s needs while planning for tomorrow.

During my first term, I have tried to approach every issue with curiosity, preparation and an open mind.

I have asked questions.

I have listened to residents.

I have listened to staff and experts.

And when it came time to vote, I made the decision I believed was in the best interests of our community.

I am ONE person with ONE vote — and I take that responsibility seriously.

Some of the Work We’ve Tackled

Memorial Arena

The future of Memorial Arena was an issue I heard about when I was campaigning in 2022.

During my term, I served on the Memorial Arena Task Force as Council and the community worked through difficult questions about the building’s condition, operating costs and future.

There were strong opinions and many different ideas.

I believe it was important that we finally confronted the issue rather than continuing to put difficult decisions off.

Community organizations ultimately stepped forward to be part of finding a way forward for the facility.

Rebuild Downtown

Goderich’s downtown is the heart of our community, but the infrastructure underneath it also needs attention.

The Rebuild Downtown project represents a significant investment in Goderich’s future.

Projects of this size bring disruption, inconvenience and significant costs. Those realities need to be acknowledged.

At the same time, continually postponing necessary infrastructure work doesn’t make the need disappear.

Throughout the process, I have continued to ask questions about costs, timelines, planning and the impact on residents and businesses.

Health Care

I have had the privilege of serving as the Town of Goderich representative on the Huron Health System Hospital Committee.

Our hospital is an essential part of our community and serves residents from throughout the region.

Supporting strong local health-care services and maintaining relationships between our municipality and health-care partners remains important to me.

Goderich Bicentennial — 2027

Goderich will celebrate its 200th anniversary in 2027.

I have been proud to serve as Chair and Town representative on the Goderich Bicentennial Committee as preparations for this historic milestone move forward.

The Bicentennial gives us an opportunity to celebrate our history, recognize the people who built our community and create something memorable for generations to come.

Beyond Council Meetings

Serving as a Councillor involves much more than attending Council meetings.

My first term has included committee work, public meetings, conferences, community events and countless conversations with residents.

These experiences have given me opportunities to learn from other municipalities, municipal professionals, community organizations and — most importantly — the people of Goderich.

Every conversation adds another perspective.

And sometimes the most important question a Councillor can ask is:

“What am I missing?”

What I’ve Learned

My first term has reinforced something I have believed throughout my working life:

You never stop learning.

Good leadership doesn’t mean having every answer.

It means being prepared to ask questions, seek information, listen to different perspectives and sometimes reconsider your original position when better information becomes available.

I believe experience matters.

But so does curiosity.

So does listening.

And so does respect.

The Work Continues

I am proud of the work I have been part of during my first term.

There is also much more to do.

The experience and knowledge I have gained since 2022 will come with me to the Council table if the residents of Goderich give me the privilege of serving another four years.

I’m ready to keep working.
